The function of a remote control unit is to depressurize the pot to stop the blasting process. As soon as it receives the signal from the operator’s deadman handle unit at the blasting nozzle position, it will depressurize the pot and stop blasting. All remote control units are fitted with silencers as standard. Remote-controlled blast pots are highly recommended to avoid accidents and reduce wastage. Repair kits for remote control units and silencers are available for maintenance.
This safety unit is used along with the remote control unit using a twin hose of ¼” and is fitted on the blast nozzle position. The deadman handle will help the blaster to depressurize the pot and stop blasting without going near to it. We highly recommend using a remote-controlled unit-fitted blast machine for a complete safe working environment.

Sand Blasting Machines and Abrasives: Advantages, Disadvantages, Safety, and the Importance of Avoiding Silica Sand
Introduction
Sand blasting machines are versatile tools widely used in industries for surface preparation, cleaning, and finishing processes. This comprehensive guide will delve into the world of sand blasting machines, exploring their working principles, the types of abrasives used, their advantages and disadvantages, safety considerations, and the crucial importance of avoiding silica sand for blasting.
I. Understanding Sand Blasting Machines
Sand blasting machines are equipment that utilize compressed air to propel abrasive materials at high speeds onto surfaces, effectively removing paint, rust, coatings, and contaminants. These machines come in various types, including pressure blast machines with single or double chambers, designed to suit different project sizes and complexities.
II. Selecting the Right Abrasives for Blasting
The choice of abrasives in sand blasting depends on the surface material and the desired results. Different types of abrasives are used for specific applications:
Coal Slag: Ideal for general-purpose blasting on steel surfaces, offering efficient cleaning and excellent profile.
Copper Slag: A popular choice for its ability to remove tough coatings and corrosion from metal surfaces.
Garnet: Known for its high-quality finish on non-ferrous surfaces, such as aluminum and stainless steel.
Steel Shot and Steel Grit: Effective in blasting heavy scale and corrosion from steel surfaces.
III. Advantages of Sand Blasting
Efficient Surface Preparation: Sand blasting ensures thorough surface preparation before coating or painting.
Versatility: Sand blasting can be used on various materials, including steel, concrete, wood, and more.
Enhanced Durability: Blasting increases the durability and longevity of surfaces by removing corrosion and rust.
Precise Cleaning: Abrasives can be chosen to achieve the desired level of cleaning, from light surface preparation to heavy-duty removal.
IV. Disadvantages and Safety Considerations
Health Hazards: Dust and debris generated during sand blasting can be hazardous if inhaled. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn by operators.
Environmental Impact: Blasting materials can create airborne particles that may pose environmental concerns if not properly contained.
Surface Damage: Improper use of sand blasting machines can lead to surface damage, such as profile inconsistency or over-blasting.
V. The Importance of Avoiding Silica Sand
In the past, silica sand was commonly used as an abrasive in sand blasting. However, due to serious health risks associated with silica dust inhalation, it is now essential to avoid using silica sand for blasting. Silica dust can lead to respiratory issues, such as silicosis, a severe lung disease. To ensure the safety of operators and comply with safety regulations, alternative abrasives should be used.
VI. Safety Measures in Sand Blasting Operations
To ensure safe sand blasting operations, the following safety measures should be strictly adhered to:
Proper Ventilation: Implement proper ventilation systems to control and minimize the dispersal of dust and airborne particles.
Personal Protective Equipment: Operators should wear appropriate PPE, including respiratory masks, goggles, gloves, and protective clothing.
Training and Certification: All operators should receive comprehensive training and certification on sand blasting operations and safety protocols.
Regular Equipment Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance of sand blasting machines to ensure their optimal performance and safety.
VII. The Advancements in Sand Blasting Technology
Sand blasting technology has evolved significantly over the years, with advancements in equipment design and automation. Today, there are sophisticated automated sand blasting systems that offer improved efficiency and precision, reducing operator fatigue and errors.
Conclusion
Sand blasting machines and abrasives play a crucial role in various industries for surface preparation and cleaning. By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different abrasives and following proper safety measures, sand blasting can be carried out effectively and safely. The shift away from silica sand usage reflects the industry’s commitment to creating a safer working environment for all operators involved in sand blasting operations.
